 文：许知远 一         “知识分子对民主国家的缺失毫不留情，却对那些以冠冕堂皇的理论的名义所犯的滔天大罪予以宽容。”雷蒙·阿隆感慨道。          这是一九五五年的法国。关于世界未来的论战中，大多数知识分子站在了左边，苏联则是他们的乌托邦。他们指责资本主义的异化，却对苏联的种种恶行保持沉默。他们担心打破头脑中“革命与进步”的幻象，似乎这比赤裸裸的现实还要残酷得多。阿隆不是第一个发出这样感慨的作家。“大家想要到这个处于分娩状态的辽阔土地去逗留逗留，我们似乎正目睹这块辽阔的土地在孕育着未来。”安德烈·纪德在十九年前访问苏联归来后写道。像当时很多欧洲与美国的知识分子一样，他是苏联的热切支持者。资本主义正陷入政治、经济与人道危机，苏联则意味着一种崭新的可能性——集体制、人人平等。就像他所写的，“那里正在进行史无前例的尝试，使我们心中充满了希望”。        纪德知道自己的描述将引起不安，即使他对更恐怖的古拉格群岛一无所知。另一位作家罗曼·罗兰早他五个月来到苏联，表达出类似的疑惑，但他执意要把日记尘封起来，五十年后才允许发表，这样就不会惊醒同伴们的美梦。 当重要知识分子纷纷前往苏联时，一些普通人也准备投奔幸福之地。一九三一年的前八个月，苏联驻纽约的贸易处收到了超过十万份移民申请，大萧条中的美国人想前往苏联工作与生活。这还是美国历史上第一次向外移民，申请者或多或少读过畅销一时的《新俄国的首演——第一个五年计划的故事》，被其中描绘的苏联生活迷住了，那里没有失业与剥削。几千名美国人最终被苏联接纳了，当然，他们没有过上幸福的生活，大多在劳改地丢掉了性命。 在很长一段时间里，对苏联的态度是西方知识分子的坐标。为什么左派们能对苏联的罪恶保持长期的沉默？在精彩绝伦的《知识分子的鸦片》中，雷蒙·阿隆试图给出答案。他追溯了左派神话的形成，马克思主义宗教式语言的诱惑力，还有法国知识分子对美国的矛盾心理。苏联的实验给予他们这样一种心理安慰——他们站在了法国大革命的光荣传统中，苏联正是这进步、自由、平等、博爱精神的体现。对他们来说，苏联人的生活到底如何并不重要，重要的是这股代表前进的历史动力。而现实的法国太令人不安，大革命以来的一个多世纪它再没有辉煌的时刻，而十年前还羞辱地臣服于纳粹德国之下。在对苏联的赞颂中，他们觉得融入了新的历史动力，内在的焦虑也减弱了。     二          随着赫鲁晓夫秘密演说的公开、匈牙利革命的爆发，苏联神话开始褪色，它至少失去了道德上的优越性，但它的诱惑犹在。人们把错误推卸给具体的领导人，从未怀疑过共产主义制度本身是否有问题，每当西方遭遇危机时，他们对苏联的感情就开始复苏。“在这个无知与健忘的土地，教训从未被吸取。”让—弗朗索瓦·勒维尔写道。这是七十年代中期的法国，知识分子再度对苏联充满幻想。美国深陷越南战争，石油危机与经济停滞似乎再一次暴露了资本主义的内在矛盾。而苏联有丰富的石油储量，它比所有国家都生产了更多的钢铁、石油、水泥，甚至拖拉机，它的军事实力与美国不相上下，是世界的第二大经济体。英国首相哈罗德·麦克米兰相信，苏联人会把军事技术转化到工业生产中，苏联可能最终超越资本主义。从智利到埃塞俄比亚，共产主义者在第三世界取得政权，苏联的全球影响力似乎也在提高。          让—弗朗索瓦·勒维尔发现，法国的知识分子再次重复了二十年前的萨特与阿隆之争。左派们似乎仍占据着上风，他们诅咒资本主义的衰退、社会不公、媒体的商品化、消费主义、军国主义，苏联的一切都是好的，甚至莫斯科的地铁票也不涨价，报纸上充斥了这样的标题——《社会主义：解决世界危机的唯一办法》。他们仍遵循着萨特的逻辑：首要任务是批判法国社会、资本主义，苏联仍是个美好的参照。但苏联并没有他们想象的这样美好，它没有石油危机，却需要大量进口小麦。赞叹莫斯科地铁票从不涨价的巴黎人，不知道苏联的土豆价格一直在上涨。苏联在人造卫星、核弹头、战斗机、钢铁制造上表现出了不可阻挡的力量，却不能给自己的人民提供足够的生活必需品，它是一个“低度发展的超级大国”。它宣称人人平等，却创造了一个等级森严的社会；它说代表无产阶级，但官僚系统才支配一切；它要全面地解放人，结果是对人的全面禁锢；它声称带来物质与精神世界的共同富足，却只创造一片荒原……即使“国家富强”也没有人们表面看到的那样强大。关于共产主义国家经济增长的书籍与论文，曾充斥美国的学术与流行期刊，很多美国学者相信苏联有一种不同的模式。经济学家加尔文·B.胡佛在一九五七年发表的一篇文章代表了当时的流行情绪。他相信，苏联的统计数字并不全然值得信赖，但或许“集体式、专制的政权”能比自由市场的民主政体取得更快的经济增长，苏联有可能在七十年代超越美国。苏联的经济增长，基于它的政治动员能力，是建立在惊人的代价上的，为了给重工业提供资金，造成了农业的普遍萧条和大饥荒，数百万的流放者成为现代奴隶。它的长远代价同样惊人：环境遭到惊人破坏，几代人头脑陷入停滞，整个社会分崩离析，自私、冷漠与虚伪四处蔓延。历史上只有很少的时期，人的尊严受到如此践踏。这种成功也注定不可持续。局外人不知道，或许也无法真相信这一切。西方报纸上充斥着危机的字眼和自我批评，它是多元社会的特征。但在苏联的公开信息上，读不到危机，只有成就与欢庆。代价可以轻易地原谅，未来总是一片光明，人们只能猜测这信息黑洞中到底发生了什么。一直到一九八九年，很少有人真的意识到，这种体制已经难以运转。          对于法国左派来说，现实是一回事（即使他们知道），观点却是另一回事，他们不愿用现实来修正既成的看法。最初的真挚信念已不可避免地衰竭，最后变成了顽固的身份确认。他们与其是对苏联的真心赞扬，不如说是对历史伤口的掩饰。或许也是对反美情绪的延伸。他们对于美国的影响力，心怀深深的不安（它在盗走拿破仑的昔日荣耀吗？）。他们也不愿意承认苏联背叛者的叙述，觉得他们是冷战阴谋的一部分，很多人觉得索尔仁尼琴描述的古拉格群岛不过是夸大其词。          苏联神话暗淡下来，一些新的替代者却正在出现。纳赛尔的阿拉伯社会主义，曾让整个中东兴奋难安，更让反殖民的西方知识分子交口称赞。卡斯特罗的古巴革命，曾令很多人欢呼雀跃，而越南共产党也激起过普遍同情，它是个纯洁的受害者。倘若苏联是历史中的恒星，它发出耀眼和持久的光芒，昭示着另一种可能性，这些国家则像是行星，它们与恒星结构相似，但光芒更微弱。它们都是反殖民浪潮的先驱者，是帝国主义的挑战者，是寻求公正的弱小者、受害者。它们内部的杀戮、恐惧与压迫，都被掩盖在这个角色之下。        在所有的替代者中，毛泽东的中国扮演着最值得期待的角色。它所激起的幻象，不仅来自二十世纪的共产主义意识形态，更来自它的古老历史。不仅是知识分子，政治家与普通公众，都亢奋不已。     三           “速成的中国学”，比利时人西蒙·雷斯创造了这个词汇，讥讽那些毫无常识与原则的中国问题专家。六七十年代的西方充满了这样的人物。他们是记者、学者、作家，有的在中国居住多年，更多的仅仅是有过短暂的旅行。他们写出或长或短的作品，他们对于一个“革命的中国”赞叹不已。他们相信毛泽东推行教育、医疗的平民化，创造了一个更平等也更朴素的社会。“中国工人的购买力绝对比法国工人少，他们的工作条件也差，工作的时间更长，一周只有一天休息，没有带薪假期，他们的住房条件也比我们差很多……但问题不在于绝对的比较，而是相对比较。比起社会的其他成员，中国工人的地位要比法国和西方民主国家的工人们高得多。就工资而言，一个熟练的技术工人挣得比一个医生、教师或是政府官员更多。”一位法国经济学家写道。他没兴趣继续追问一句，为什么一个受过良好教育的医生要比一个工人挣得少？ “文化大革命”更充满了浪漫，古老的中国到处是灿烂的文化、光辉的革命。中国不仅是伯克利、巴黎、柏林、东京的反叛青年们的灵感之源，也是很多第三世界国家模仿的榜样。从游击战术到医疗、教育体系，再到独立自主的外交政策，都给予他们鼓舞。          毛泽东与尼克松的会面，令中国变得更为时髦。尼克松与基辛格迷恋毛泽东无上的权力，没有一个民主国家的领导人，能像他这样率性而为，半人半神似的统治着世界最大的国家。中国也是他们重塑世界秩序的个人野心的合作者。即使对于那些从不支持“红色中国”的人来说，中国也散发出新的魅力，它是美国对抗苏联的盟友。在这种新眼光下，中国的一切都合情合理。“       [中国]的政治体制……在我们看来，被绝大部分中国人所支持……昔日的政权失败了，但中华人民共和国成功地用经济安全取代了贫困，用秩序替代了无序，大众的正义取代了对大众的压迫，力量取代了无力，民族骄傲取代了屈辱。”一个美国代表团在访问中国后写道。著名记者詹姆斯·莱斯顿则相信，“他们正在很有意识地生活着，重建着自己的国家，也重建着自己”，甚至单调的装束都别具风采，“女子绝对没有化妆，虽然她们养育着世界所有民族中最庞大的人口，但多少隐藏着自己的胸部。同今天西方世界的暴露性时装相比，她们的服饰很纯洁，很一致而又古老，但这里包含着一种巨大的美和风采”。          政治的混乱、经济的崩溃、社会的压抑、个人的绝望，他们对这个真实的中国毫无感知。著名记者哈里斯·索尔斯伯里在一九七二年五月认定，“文革”的混乱已经结束了，一种新精神已经到来。比起他在苏联所见——年轻人盲目崇拜西方、追随西方的流行文化——中国人则表现出自尊，“他们站起来了。他们有自尊和尊严”。 你可以说，他们不是真正的中国专家，从未认真学习过中国的历史与政治，即使他们亲身到来了，也只是浮光掠影地旅行，旅程又是被精心安排的，没人会对他们敞开心扉，就像一位美国人所说，“中国的每一个人——从走出厨房来接受我们称赞的厨师一直到总理——说话时用的词汇完全一样”。这个惊心营造的中国，像是三十年代苏联的另一个翻版。 但那些真正的中国专家呢？西蒙·雷斯提到了韩素音与罗斯·特里尔。韩素音是半英半中的混血儿，见证了中日战争到“文化大革命”的历史，熟识宋美龄、周恩来等重要人物。她用英文写作中国题材，是那个时代最受欢迎的作家之一。在为世界描绘中国时，她称“文化大革命”是一场“人类的大跃进”，并且促进经济发展；红卫兵则行为良好，富有民主观念；江青则尽其可能减少暴力的发生……         罗斯·特里尔则是一位公认的汉学家。他对中国的描述不仅在英语世界畅销一时，他的《毛泽东传》的中文版至今仍是同类题材中最受中国人欢迎的著作。西蒙·雷斯发现，罗斯·特里尔没有写出韩素音式的谎言，但他也从未揭示出中国的真相。他是个诙谐、经常也很敏锐的观察者，中国被它描绘成陌生和奇特之地，他不描写残酷、虚假和不公，更不对此作出道德判断。“有娱乐性，但不要富于争议；回避一切可能带来困扰、激起不安，或带来不愉快的话题；取悦每一个人。”西蒙·雷斯这样评价特里尔的风格。在他看来，特里尔的《毛泽东传》的献词再好不过地展现了这种风格：“献给在今日一些国家渴望的领袖天才，也同样献给那些想摆脱领袖的神秘感的普通人。”所有伤痛都在这献词中被一笔带过，领袖与人民都是对的，没人要为历史承担责任。倘若社会主义要求它的艺术家们删除作品灰色、负面的情绪，只表现斗志昂扬，罗斯·特里尔则进行了类似的自我审查。他的语调和结论总倾向于乐观，以至于忘记追问逻辑关系。在评价一九四九年后的中国时，他说新政权“养活了世界四分之一人口，工业产值每年增长百分之十”，它取得了“三十年的社会进步”。即使我们不去追问大饥荒的真相，一个至今仍常被混淆的逻辑是——是世界这四分之一的人口自己养活了自己，也养活了这个政权，而不是倒过来。农民们在参加“忆苦思甜”活动时，自然地回到的是“三年自然灾害”时期——他们的记忆里没有比这更苦的时光了。它也不缘于“自然灾害”，而是狂热政策的后果。          “在他们眼中，法西斯政府是家族里的黑羊，它选择了错误的道路，背叛了文明，让文明蒙羞，而斯大林政权被视作来自另一个星球的奇特生命：如果这些人愿意相互残杀，这是他们的事。”让—弗朗索瓦·勒维尔这样写道。他试图解释知识分子为何严厉谴责法西斯德国，却对共产主义苏联持宽容态度。 黑羊的比喻冷酷，却很可能是事实。俄国来自东方，人们认定一直被残暴所左右的传统。而比起斯拉夫人，中国才是真正的东方，它更遥远、神秘，更像另一个星球。尼克松就曾感慨，二十年来前往中国的美国人比前往月球的人还要少。所以，中国的残酷性，也更容易被接受。          西蒙·雷斯发现，尽管鲍若望的回忆录《毛的囚徒》、陈若曦的小说《尹县长》是对毛泽东时代真实的揭露，但它们没引起西方的重视，中国人正在遭遇的痛苦，淹没在中国的另一个形象中了。他们对中国的乐观判断基于这样的逻辑：中国真的不同，我们对它采用另一个衡量标准；中国有它的问题，我们也有自己的问题，我们无权去指责它。对暴力的崇拜、隔岸观火的快乐、廉价的东方主义，构成了这些中国崇拜者的内心。 西蒙·雷斯是那个年代的异类，他翻译过《论语》，沉醉于中国的山水画。一九五五年，他第一次来到新成立的中华人民共和国，为其激动不已。但在接下来的岁月里，他的态度发生了戏剧性的转变。一九六七年，居住在香港的他看到了顺珠江漂流而来，又被海水冲到岸边的尸体——他们是广东武斗的丧命者。他与逃到香港的中国人交谈、阅读中文报纸，逐渐了解中国的真相。一九七二年，他作为外交官在北京生活了半年，这段经验肯定了他对于中国的判断。在其他的外来者纷纷感慨“中国的新精神”与“新的中国人”时，他说毛泽东的文化革命“是一项使地球上最聪明的人民沦为白痴的庞大工程”。他几年后出版的《中国的阴影》一书，像是中国文人画的疏离与 乔治·奥威尔的犀利的混合体，压抑不住自己的愤怒。他的观点却受到西方左派的广泛质疑。 “很显然，它是反共的知识分子时尚，尤其是针对第三世界时，”一位美国学者投书《纽约书评》，他接着写道，“……这种欧洲知识分子的倾向至少可以上溯到黑格尔，他用东方专制主义形容中国。” 但一切可能并非这么简单。八十年代的汉学家热衷于与众不同的邓小平时代，只有西蒙·雷斯仍在强调“这个政权从未改变”。但在八十年代末的悲剧发生不久后的一篇文章中，西蒙·雷斯也预言说，不管有多么令人不安的事情发生过，西方的政客与商人们仍将迅速到来，以促进改革的名义，重新恢复与中国政府的关系。只要给他们足够多的时间，他们将及时治疗好这短暂的道德创伤。     四           道德创伤愈合之快，有甚于想象。旧神话刚刚破灭，新神话就迅速到来。“中国的革命”仍在继续，它从意识形态转移到商业，从“文革”标语转到GDP数字。又一股“速成汉学家”的潮流到来了。他们不需要憧憬阶级斗争与社会主义，而是谈论商业、进出口的贸易额，还要引用《论语》与《孙子兵法》的只言片语，它们模棱两可又意味深长。他们还有一种莫名的确信，中国再次成为世界超级大国。再没有人比美国人李敦白（Sydney Rittenberg）更能体现这种变化。 在一九八〇年离开中国时，李敦白满是苦涩与幻灭。他在中国已经居住了三十五年，是世界唯一的外籍中国共产党党员。他在延安的窑洞里与毛泽东谈论美国，也与周恩来相熟。他被中国革命深深地吸引了，这里不仅有为“人类的平等与正义奋斗”的理想，他还找到了一直渴望的归属感。他出生在南加州的犹太家庭，他的父亲是一名出色的律师。犹太人的身份令他对社会不公格外敏感。大学期间，他加入了美国共产党，党给予他“纠正周围充满的不公现象的希望”。接着他加入美军，学习中文，然后被派往中国，成为解决战后中国问题的美军代表团中的一位年轻军官。国民党统治区的丑陋、不公与腐败，令他心生厌恶，共产党的宣传品则激起他的向往之心。          在周恩来的帮助下，他来到延安，认定这是个美丽的新世界——这里人人平等，为共同的理想而奋斗。他也发现自己获得前所未有的中心感，毛泽东对他颇感兴趣，所有人对他都特别礼遇。        他找到了发挥才干的机会，他把外电翻译成中文，向外界宣传中国共产党的政策与主张。他进入了斯诺、白求恩的行列，这是国际主义者对中国革命的援助，也是中国西北一角的脆弱政权对于外部世界的渴望。 美军的任务结束了，他留在了中国，西德尼·里腾博格变成了李敦白。但灾难也随着共产党的获胜到来，一九四九年一月，作为帝国主义的间谍，他被投入监牢。        牢狱生活没有摧毁他的信念，反而让他狂热。他相信这是党对于他忠诚的考验。六年后他获释，对他的指控被证明是个荒诞不经的错误。        接下来的十三年，他投入了新中国的建设。他模糊地感受到这个国家正在遭遇的灾难，反右运动、大跃进、大饥荒，但从未把它们视作制度上的根本缺陷。况且，他个人生活随着整个国家的暗淡而节节上升。他是北京的外国人社区的中心人物，唯一可以进入中国官僚系统的外国人，阅读普通人难以接触的红头文件。 他对党的政治忠诚也轻易压倒了个人情感。当他的妻子与右派朋友交往时，他紧张不安，想阻止她。即使他对中国有少许不满，也在一九六六年时彻底消失了。“文化大革命”爆发，他感到中国再度进入一个新时代，新中国的所有弊病都将在新的革命中一扫而空。他拥到毛泽东周围索要签名，在集会上挥舞着红宝书，高呼毛主席语录。南加州的美国人穿着蓝色毛式中山装，是中国革命魅力的绝佳展现。          “文革”之火燃烧了中国，燃烧了他的内心，最终也燃烧到他的身体。他再度成为帝国主义间谍，被投入了监狱。这真是炼狱的时光，他熬了过来。一九七七年，他回到家中时，他的确变成了“社会主义新人”，让他忧心忡忡的不是妻子与孩子，而是“社会主义革命”是否失败了？到处弥漫着幻灭、消沉与怨气。        他不是“速成的汉学家”，但倘若你以为这过分丰富的人生经历，能赋予他一种特别的洞察力，则是另一种一厢情愿。他批评此刻中国人丢掉了灵魂，共产党丧失了让他们成功的法宝——他们没有了指导思想，不再实事求是。他谈论西藏时会感慨，“为什么一个国家可以有这么好的外交政策、对台政策，却有这么糟的民族政策”。他仍相信中国可以建立一套更好的民主系统——“因为美国民主是完全被金钱控制的”。        他似乎一点没变。那个狂热的共产主义信徒和这个满口嘲讽的商业顾问，从未意识到中国内在的逻辑是什么。一个信徒只选择看到自己相信的东西，对于现实视而不见，在“拯救人民”的名义下，他对于人民从来毫无兴趣，一个关心“社会主义实验”有甚于妻子和朋友的人，又怎么真会关心具体的人。五十年后，他意识到昔日狂热的可笑，他变得足够狡猾，再不愿说出自己真实的想法。他仍旧对中国人的真实境地毫无兴趣，他只迷恋自己的个人经验。三十年前，他还可因一次判决而愤然出离中国，而现在，他再没有精力，也没有心情为另一场判决愤怒了。也有可能，他一生命运都与中国紧密相连，中国变成他身份的一部分，他的痛苦与荣耀都来自它。他无法否定自己一生的意义。他再度变成了另一种腐化的俘虏。        但谁又能逃脱这种腐化的力量？李敦白回到美国之后的十年里，西方知识分子普遍盛赞中国，相信这个政权已经改变。不管是李敦白，还是约书亚·拉莫、约翰·奈斯比特、托马斯·弗里德曼、马丁·雅克，中国只是他们的幻想之物。中国是对美国霸权的挑战，是十三亿市场的黄金国，是致命的权力诱惑……        人们总是生活在对别人的想象中。但倘若这想象中丧失了基本的价值判断，则经常变成历史的污点。人们不仅赞扬过苏联，也大声为希特勒与墨索里尼喝过彩——他们能让德国与意大利运转起来，至于犹太人的命运，谁又在乎呢？道德意识被遗忘、被遮蔽、被交换。          而现代历史的中国人呢，要么是革命的材料，要么是生产者与消费者，他们从来都不是丰富的个体，从来面目不清。鲁迅的愤怒与嘲讽值得重新一提：“凡有来到中国的，倘能疾首蹙额而憎恶中国，我敢诚意地捧献我的感谢，因为他一定是不愿意吃中国人的肉的！”          我们终不能制止别人的想象，这是人类根深蒂固的弱点。在我列举了那么多外来者愚蠢与不诚实的例证后，我不得不承认，正是因为自我欺骗，才让我们如此热衷于别人的谎言……

Because I'll often tweet the link to the presentation as I go on stage or just prior, I'm able to give the audience an opportunity to download and follow along. This has several cool effects: The slideshow URL gets tweeted and re-tweeted and seen by thousands more people than just the few hundred usually in the room. Those attendees are often the most active sharers, resulting in a terrific, positive re-inforcement cycle (so long as I do a good job) :-) Having the slideshow seen by so many often means it goes to the frontpage of Slideshare, getting even more exposure. When I spend a dozen or more hours making a slide deck for a presentation to 300 people, it's great to know that there's the potential to get much more exposure via inbound marketing of that content afterward The slideshow pages contain lots of links, which drives visits to many web marketing sites I reference, as well as SEOmoz itself. Those sites who get traffic often send me notes of thanks (when it's I who should be thanking them for making my job easier) and everyone wins as the audience gets valuable links and the sites, Moz included, get high quality, relevant traffic. If you're on the road at events large or small, let me highly recommend this approach. And, hopefully, these slide decks prove useful, too! My next few trips will take me to SMX Munich, where I'll be leaking our first results from the user surveys and correlation data collected for the 2011 version of the Search Engine Ranking Factors. After that, I'm off to SMX Sydney, where I'll be on a number of panels around SEO topics. In late May, we're working to hold an informal, free Moz meetup with Avi Wilensky's ProMediaCorp in New York City (dates/specifics TBD) followed immediately by Distilled's Boston PRO Training seminar and, finally a keynote of SMX France in Paris in early June.
